My Doula Philosophy

As a mother of 9 who gave birth to 7 children, I’ve experienced nearly every type of birth – hospital births with epidurals, unmedicated births, cesarean sections, VBAC, fast labors, long labors, and everything in between. This personal experience combined with 16 years as a professional birth worker gives me deep understanding of the physical and emotional journey of childbirth.

What Guides My Doula Practice:

Your Birth, Your Choices:
I support ALL birth choices without judgment. Epidural or unmedicated, hospital or home, induction or spontaneous – your preferences guide my support.

Evidence-Based Care:
I provide current research and information so you can make informed decisions, never pushing my own agenda.

Continuous Presence:
When you’re in active labor, I’m with you until your baby is born. I don’t leave for shift changes or breaks.

Partner Empowerment:
I enhance your partner’s ability to support you – never replace them. You’ll work together as a team.

Cultural Sensitivity:
I honor your values, traditions, and family dynamics. Every family is unique.

Trauma-Informed:
I’m trained to support survivors of trauma with extra sensitivity and awareness.

Advocacy, Not Authority:
I help you communicate with medical staff and understand your options, but YOU make the decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I hire a doula?
Many families book during second trimester (16-24 weeks) to ensure availability. However, I’m happy to support families at any stage if my schedule allows. Contact me as soon as you’re interested!

What if I want an epidural?
I fully support all pain management choices! Doulas are valuable for medicated births too – helping you labor effectively before the epidural, supporting you through placement, and providing continuous support after.

Will you replace my partner?
Never! I enhance your partner’s ability to support you. I teach them comfort measures, give them breaks, handle logistics so they can focus on you, and coach them to be your best support person.

Do you deliver babies?
No – I’m not a medical provider. Your doctor or midwife delivers your baby. I provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth.

What if you’re at another birth when I go into labor?
I carefully limit the number of clients per month to minimize conflicts. I also have backup doula arrangements to ensure you always have experienced support.

Can you guarantee I won’t have a cesarean?
No one can guarantee birth outcomes. However, research shows doula support reduces cesarean rates by up to 39%. If cesarean becomes necessary, I’ll support you through that experience.

Do you work with midwives and doctors?
Yes! I work collaboratively with all types of care providers. I respect your chosen provider’s medical expertise while providing you with continuous support.
